It is my great pleasure to introduce you all to a good friend and amazing coach, Anthony DiSarro. Anthony will be joining the Balanced Bites team as a guest blogger in some upcoming posts on training and performance as well as co-teaching the Balanced Bites Nutrition Workshop at Tacoma Strength on November 17th, 2012. I’m excited to have him share his knowledge and expertise with all of you as I trust his advice and approach to coaching without hesitation.

Can you tell everyone a bit about your background as an athlete and a police officer?

Growing up in South Florida I virtually lived on the beach. I played several sports but baseball quickly became my passion. Relying on natural ability, I became high level high school and collegiate baseball player. In 1994 I was given the opportunity to try out for several professional baseball teams including the Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros and to play baseball in China.

I became a Law Enforcement Officer in 1997 and by 2000, I was instructing a variety of High Liability disciplines including, Defensive Tactics, Pursuit Driving Techniques, Baton and Special Tactical Problems. In 2002, I was selected to travel to other Law Enforcement agencies throughout the country to instruct criminal street gang enforcement and tracking methods.

What kind of training were you following before CrossFit?

During these years, I stayed “fit” through a typical bodybuilding approach to training and nutrition. Basically, I ate whatever “fitness” magazines said to eat; protein, brown rice, oatmeal, protein bars, and whatever the most popular supplements were for that month. All the while, I knew there had to be something better.

When did you get started with CrossFit, and why?

I began CrossFit in late 2007 in a search for the next level of fitness. I built a pull up bar in the backyard, bought a rower and a kettle bell, and began developing a new level of fitness that could not be found through “typical” gym workouts. When I needed some additional equipment, I was given permission to use a small corner of a local high school weight room for CrossFit. I told anyone who would listen to me about the workouts I was doing and I soon had several full-time SWAT team members showing up on a regular basis to train and learn. It became a common site to see me carrying a set of rings, kettle bells, and dragging a rower into the high school gym to train.

The group grew and grew as did their fitness levels, and in 2008 I founded what would be Southwest Florida’s first CrossFit Affiliate – CrossFit Redline. In approximately 800 square feet of industrial space, CrossFit Redline open its doors officially to a hand full of clients.

Can you tell us about your CrossFit operation and coaching/programming style today?

Today, CrossFit Redline operates out of a 3,500 square foot facility that is pure CrossFit. We have had hundreds of members, visitors from all over the country and Canada and have worked closely with 2007 CrossFit Games Champion James Fitzgerald and 2012 CrossFit Games 3rd place athlete Talayna Fortunato.

Anthony works with group and private clients at CrossFit Redline as well as with remote coaching clients. Through detailed physical assessment, goal setting, nutrition consults, and program design, Anthony has been able to help clients meet and exceed their goals through an individualized approach.

Anthony and his wife Alison have 4 beautiful children and 25 years of law enforcement experience between them. They enjoy their own family as well as their gym-family of amazing members at CrossFit Redline in Naples, Florida.
