Highlights from Instagram

Someone recently commented to me thanking me for “not getting political in my posts.” I don’t know if it’s the rebel in me, or simply that it upset me to think that anyone might assume I don’t have things to say about what’s going on in our country right now that I’d like or want to share publicly. I sat for a week trying to figure out how to say anything about this. I debating not saying anything here, because social media isn’t all of my actual life – just because I don’t or didn’t say anything here doesn’t mean it isn’t happening in my real life. But, then it hit me that not saying something isn’t how I want to be. Because while I try to keep my posts on the positive side of things, to be a place to uplift and inspire others, this is simply not okay. And so, here’s what I have to say right now. And I don't honestly see this as a view about politics, it's one about humanity. . I have a lot of really sad, upset, angry, and frustrated feelings going on regarding Charlottesville, and I know I can't truly verbalize them. . What I *can* say is that:
1. I recognize my privilege as a white person.
I have flown THREE times within the United States without proper identification (once because it was lost, and the other times due to simply forgetting my ID at home). And, each time, it was hardly a problem and I was escorted through security with their “process” but also almost laughingly so. I wouldn't even say it was more difficult than flying with an ID save for a pat down. I know for sure this process would not be the same for anyone other than a white man or woman who looks very clearly white. . 2. I'm horrified to think of how my now passed German Jewish grandmother would have responded to seeing the Nazi representation in such recent news, given any sort of spotlight, and not being 100% condemned by the POTUS. . 3. If there is a way I can be an ally in this to any of you, please help me to know and understand what that looks like. . I am for love and not for hate.
We all bleed the same way.
We are all in this together.
This is not okay. . I know that well-meaning, imperfect words are better than silence. So these are my words.
