How to Increase Your Bench Press, Working Out Sore, and Are Dietary “Cheat Days” OK?
By Jen Sinkler (@jensinkler) / May 2012

Jen Sinkler, our editorial director for fitness content, wrangles leading experts to address your most perplexing workout quandries and conundrums.
“Are “Cheat Days” OK?
I am following a pretty strict dietary regimen. Is it OK to observe a weekly “cheat day”?
A: “I dislike the term ‘cheating,’” says Diane Sanfilippo, NC, HLC, certified nutrition consultant and founder of BalancedBites.com. “If your diet is so impossible to maintain that you feel the need to ‘cheat’ regularly to keep your sanity, then perhaps that way of eating isn’t right for you. That said, I do believe that occasional treats are totally fine. Enjoying a glass of wine and some dark chocolate won’t typically cause problems. It’s frequently indulging in foods like bread, pasta, pizza and bagels that can send a person into a downward spiral with regard to digestive function and suppressed immunity.”
Achieving your fitness and nutrition goals is like taking a long road trip: You can stop as often as you’d like along the way, Sanfilippo says, but it’ll take you that much longer to reach your destination. Some stops may be worth it; others are simply a waste of time.

Graduate Spotlight: Diane Sanfilippo, Nutrition Consultant
“I attended the Nutrition Consultant Training Program in Berkeley, CA and graduated in June of 2011. Early in 2008, I opened Balanced Bites, an organic, gluten-free meal delivery business. I managed all aspects of the business, including web design, marketing, shopping for ingredients, menu planning, cooking, and delivery of meals. After only a few months, I realized I wanted to do more than provide healthy meals — I wanted to teach my clients, family, and friends to provide for themselves. I realized my passion was to teach people how they could take responsibility for their own health through proper nutrition and lifestyle. I wanted to enable my clients to plan, shop for, and prepare healthy meals all on their own.”

Sean’s Story: Paleo, Type 1 Diabetes & the Endurance Athelete
“…After easing into it with Tim Ferriss’s “slow carb” diet, and then using The Paleo Diet for Athletes as a guide, I made the real paleo plunge–that is, no grains of any sort–in August.
Ok, actually I was pushed into the paleo vortex by my nutritionist, Diane of Balanced Bites.
After mentioning that I was diabetic, I think I got about six seconds into listing what I ate before Diane cut me off and told me that Grain Land would no longer be an option. Holy cats indeed, man.
I completely eliminated gluten and grains and nearly all dairy, though I continued to eat some cheese and a little grass-fed butter or ghee. Switching to this diet template not only helped achieve normal average blood glucose ranges, but it has wiped out extreme highs (160 mg/dL and up) and curved postprandial blood glucose down to much better levels. Pre-paleo, in addition to generally running high (above 100 mg/dL), I’d often be between 130 mg/dL – 160 mg/dL for hours after meals. Today, this rarely happens because my blood glucose rarely spikes, period.”

“Paleo diet suggests you get back to your caveman roots”
By Stefanie Loh, The Patriot-News
“The largest benefit of going Paleo is that “it restores normal function to your gut and digestive system,” said Diane Sanfilippo, a holistic nutritionist who runs a Paleo nutrition blog. “It’s what most people have trouble with but they don’t even know because nobody talks about it. Bloating and diarrhea are not normal and we shouldn’t be experiencing that at all.”
Adopting the Paleo perspective is like hitting a reset button on your digestive system.”

“DIY: Maple-Sage Beef Jerky Recipe”
People tend to over-complicate making beef jerky. I have found that if you’re dealing with good quality meat (ideally grass-fed), when it comes to a marinade, less is more. The very first time I made jerky it was from elk and I basically tossed the meat in some spices and then chucked it in the dehydrator.
