Since it’s inception in April of 2009, The 21-Day Sugar Detox, has helped thousands of people bust their sugar and carb cravings, increase energy, improve sleep quality and lose weight. The program is designed in three Levels, introducing Level 1 participants to a life without refined foods, but not excluding all grain, legume and dairy products. Level 2 goes on to exclude grain and legume products while Level 3 is a strict Paleo diet with additional modifications specific to The 21-Day Sugar Detox‘s goals for participants in breaking their sugar and carb addictions.

What does it mean when recipes are “21DSD-friendly”?

Recipes that are acceptable for Levels 1, 2 and 3 of The 21-Day Sugar Detox are featured on these websites in separate categories to help you find them easily.

All 21DSD-friendly recipes will contain real whole foods and exclude most starches and all forms of sugar and sweeteners. Athletes and pregnant or nursing mothers should see the special modifications in the manual to guide their detox processes as they vary slightly from the standard approach.

All 21DSD-friendly recipes featured on external websites and not included in the guides themselves are reviewed by the Balanced Bites/21DSD team on a regular basis, so you can be sure your  choices are in line with the 21DSD program.

Here are some of the things people are saying about their experiences with The 21-Day Sugar Detox:

KendalHeadshotI’ve suffered from sugar addiction my entire life and have only felt free of it during and after The 21-Day Sugar Detox. My mood is more stable than ever, my skin clearer, my sleep better, and my cravings are gone. My winter eczema disappeared just one week into the detox! I have a deeper understanding of my relationship with sugar now and how it’s always controlled me. I love when my friends, family, and clients reveal their own 21-Day Sugar Detox results. The healing that takes place is astonishing.”
Kendall Kendrick of Primal Balance

DaniellePrestejohnHeadshot“I loved the 21 DSD. It showed me how dependent my body actually was on sugar and also got me back on track with a more paleo based diet. It was a great reset with my body and I felt great by the end of the 21 days. It brought me back to the basics of consuming mostly plants, lean proteins, and healthy fats, and not being so reliant on sugars and fruits to give me energy through the day. Diane is awesome and certainly knows her stuff!”
– Danielle Prestejohn of Clean Food Creative Fitness

GeorgeBryantHeadshot“There are times when we all think that are eating perfectly for our bodies and that we are in optimal health. I personally carry this thought every day since I eat a squeaky clean Paleo diet 100% of the time, but it couldn’t be further from the truth.  We all get caught up in routines, some good and some bad which can easily knock our body’s processes out of balance. In comes Diane’s amazing 21 Day Sugar Detox. I could sit here and sell you on the incredible weight loss results you will benefit from, or the improved sleep, or better mood, or reduced food cravings – but none of those compare to knowing what it feels like to be running like a well oiled machine. I personally use Diane’s 21-Day Sugar Detox program once a quarter just to kick my body back into gear and to make sure things are running optimally – and it works every time. Honestly, the six pack isn’t bad either!”

I am curious to know the difference between Practical Paleo and the 21DSD? Are there different recipes and info?

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

The 21DSD is a specific program to help those with sugar & carb cravings and is not initially centered around eating a Paleo diet though Level 3 of the program is grain and dairy-free. The 21DSD is great for anyone to do, not just those who are ready to commit full to being on a Paleo type of diet. Hope that helps!

        Hi Diane,

I tried your 21day sugar detox last summer and I love it.
Thanks for including lots of great recipes to make it easier.
For those who are thinking cutting sugar out of your lives might be difficult, it really isn’t. Once the cravings are broken, sugar will actually repulse you. It make take a few detoxes because we all have relapses, but eventually, you won’t crave sugar at all.
        Happy New Year

  • Rachel

I’m working on eliminating nuts right now. Sugar detox will come after I’m off all foods that commonly cause sensitivity.

  • Cindi

I am interested in joining the next 21DSD but am unable to begin until January 7th to 8th. Would that be a problem?

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

Nope, not at all. You can start whenever you would like.

  • http://www.LifenBites.com Gianna

This seems like a perfect way to start the new year! Is this program good for someone who is trying to heal their digestive system?

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

Gianna- I would say it is for sure at Level 3 especially. If you would like to check out a more specific program to support digestive healing thereafter, there is a 30-Day Meal Plan for Digestive Health in my book, “Practical Paleo.” >> http://amzn.to/practicalpaleo

  • Karen

Any modifications for kids (4 & 6) or recommended level for the 21DSD?

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

Nope! They can follow along as others can just fine. If they are pretty active, you can treat them as “athletes” and make more use of the carbs listed :)

  • Lulu

Is kombucha like GT’s Synergy allowed on the detox?

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

This is covered in the Yes/No foods list in the guides!

  • Summer Long

I just purchased my ebook a couple hours ago… looking through the guides, I can’t find a meal plan or shopping list anywhere. I want to follow it word by word level 3 because I have 20 pounds to lose…I’m wondering if my http://deliciouspaleo.wordpress.com/2012/08/16/18/ ANDhttp://www.paleoplan.com/2010/01-03/myras-chopped-mushrooms-eggs-and-onion/ are good meals. And I need a shopping list option…. thanks!

    • http://www.balancedbites.com Diane

There are not meal plans or shopping lists in the 21DSD guides. The program must be pretty specifically tailored to your needs, tastes, food sensitivities, and activity levels. Please come talk about it over on the FB group. The Food Lovers have a meal plan you can look at if you like here: http://beta.primal-palate.com/menus/21-day-sugar-detox/

  • Michelle

    Hi Diane,
I just received your book for Christmas and am eager to join the Paleo lifestyle. I am curious if you’ve met anyone or had anyone attempt to follow a Paleo plan in attempt to increase fertility? I’m about 70 lbs. overweight and my husband and I have been trying to conceive for almost three years with no luck. Last year we started fertility treatments and were told that I was not ovulating and my body was not producing eggs. With no luck from fertility treatments, I want to attempt to try whatever I can nutritionally prior to even considering looking for an egg donor. I just have to believe that losing weight and transitioning to a healthy lifestyle can do something for us. Just curious if you’ve had any success stories in this area?

    • Fay Beaudoin

      Hi Michelle,
You are so right to believe that loosing weight and transitioning to a healthier lifestyle can do something for you. Being overweight makes your insulin resistance worse. By losing weight, you will help reduce your insulin and also your androgens levels, which could restore your ovulation. The Paleo lifestyle is really helpful in the sense that you get rid of the bad carbs ( no grains, no dairy). Along with your dietary modification, don’t forget to add exercise to the mix. It might prevent insulin resistance. Starting with a sugar detox is a good way to move toward a healthier lifestyle.
Good luck with your goals! Fay

Guess I should have said, too, that they diagnosed me with polycystic ovarian disease. Lots of cysts on my ovaries.

I just purchased the detox and need to print it out!
I opened it on my phone and have not received email confirmation with info.
Is it possible to open it on kindle, phone and print or only one form is allowed after purchase??
I need to get my plans in place to begin deriding asap, I’m excited to begin!!
    Thank you!!

A client of mine told me about this program, she completed it and was raving about it. I didn’t have sugar cravings myself as I have been following a primal diet for years now. I was however excited as I have been able to recommend this to other clients, family and friends that have needed to make a change. Keep up the amazing work! It really makes a huge difference to so many people.

I ate pumpkin pie then few hours later I ate pea soup. I took DiGel liquid. At bedtime I slept after 5 hours then suffer g.e.r.d. I looked back DiGel and found out it has Sorbitol. Damn it.

  • http://www.LifenBites.com Gianna

Thanks again for this detox! I’ll be sure to hop on for round 2.

Although I was eating Paleo I was consuming way too many fruits. It also just occurred to me I should be following a low fodmap diet. Would you say its safe/possible to combine paleo/lowfodmap together? (considering there are a lot of veggies/fruit that trigger bad digestion for me)

  • http://Www.knoxsecurity.com Jon

I started the diet a week or so ago… Feeling great, sugars are a turn off now… I have one question though. While on the detox is organic tomato sauce acceptable. I reallynwant to make stuffed bell peppers.

    • http://www.balancedbites.com admin

YES! Just read the label and ingredients!! Many have added sugars, citric acid, or strange oils (canola, soybean, etc.).
